The Rama Varma Union Club, established in 1881, has a rich history linked to the founding of modern Kottayam. Both the club and Kottayam itself owe their origins to Thanjavoor Rama Rayar, the Diwan Peshkar of the Northern Division of Travancore State.
In the late 19th century, Kottayam was a small village surrounded by wild growth and laterite boulders. The only habitation was at Thazhathangady, connected by the Meenachil River. This region had a historical significance as the last stronghold of the Rajahs of Thekkumcore.
However, after Marthanda Varma conquered Thekkumcore in 1749, Kottayam remained dormant for many years. It was only in 1818 when English education started in the area, followed by the arrival of Rama Rayar in 1880 as Diwan Peshkar, that Kottayam began to change.
Rama Rayar transformed the landscape, creating a new township from Thirunakkara Temple to the Collectorate area. He established amenities for the citizens, including the Union Club, inspired by European clubs, to promote healthy bodies and minds. This club eventually evolved into the Rama Varma Union Club.
Over time, the club thrived under the patronage of various Diwan Peshkars and received royal support from the Maharaja of Travancore, leading to its renaming as the Rama Varma Union Club.
Throughout its 141-year history, the club expanded its activities and facilities, including tennis courts, indoor sports facilities, a guest house, and a water sports complex on the banks of Vembanad Lake. It has seen remarkable growth under the leadership of esteemed individuals from various fields.
Today, the club continues to flourish under the guidance of its dedicated directors, aiming to reach greater heights.
